of Iowa Press - Short Fiction
The Iowa Short Fiction Award
and the John Simmons Short Fiction Award are open to any writer who has
not previously published a volume of prose fiction. Award-winning manuscripts
will be published by the University of Iowa Press under the Press's standard
contract. The manuscript must be a collection of short stories (NOVELS
ARE NOT CONSIDERED) of at least 150 word-processed, double-spaced pages.
Deadlines
- Entries for the competition for the annual Iowa Short Fiction Award
and John Simmons Short Fiction Award should be submitted between August

Fees: $5 for one poem; $10

Poetry Competition
Annual Contest - Deadline
August 15th each year. History themes may include - but are not limited
to - recorded historic events, explanation of historic events, biography,
narrative, comedic, historical concerns, or other themes. $5.00 fee per
category entered, for up to 3 poems. 40% of all proceeds will be distributed
to winners as follows: First Place Winners will receive 25% of proceeds,
Second Place Winners will receive 15%. Third Place Winners receive a one-year
subscription to MAIL CALL JOURNAL. In addition, all winning poems will

sci-fi, confession, mystery, western, etc. No children's stories. Maximum

September 10, 2001. Poem for or about children. No line limit. Entry fee
$3. Prizes: $40, $25, $10. NOSTALGIA-Deadline September 20, 2001.
A fond remembrance of the way things were. Maximum 1,200 words. Entry fee
$4. Prizes: $40, $25, $15. POEM IN FORMAL STRUCTURE -Deadline September
28, 2001. Try a sestina, sonnet, villanelle or any other form that requires

Boston Review - Ninth
Annual Short Story Contest
Deadline September 1, 2001
- The winning author will receive $1,000 and have his or her work published
in the December/January 2001-02 issue of Boston Review. Stories should
not exceed four thousand words and must be previously unpublished. A $15
processing fee, payable to Boston Review in the form of a check or money

The Bellwether
Prize for Non-Fiction
Applicants for the Bellwether
Prize must be U.S. citizens who have some previous publication record,
but who have not previously published a book that sold more than 10,000
copies. Fee: $25 processing fee. Deadline - Postmark entry between September
1 and October 1, 2001. Prize: Only one manuscript will receive the Bellwether
Prize in a given year - author of the winning manuscript will receive $25,000,
and will enter into a publishing contract with a publishing company in
