Self-Publishing - E-Book Tools You Will Need

There are a few software tools you will need to create and self-publish your own e-book. To create a book which is browser compatible (readable in Netscape or Explorer .html format) you will require an HTML editor. Some are available free. You may already have one if you are viewing this page in either of the browsers mentioned above. Netscape comes with "Netscape Composer" and Explorer has "Front Page". Or, you may prefer to create your book in .pdf format for which you will need Adobe Acrobat (also available free off the Net). Before choosing which text format you would like to use it is recommended you read our section on the Open Book Initiative here at the Writer's Nook.

Any format you choose will require a good e-book compiler software program to convert your text to a book look and feel. We recommend the latest version of E-ditor Software. It will have the extra components you will definitely need and some bonus features you will probably enjoy. Things to look for in a good e-book compiler program are:

  • Unlimited Creation of e-Books: some software programs allow you to compile only one e-book and require additional fees to create more.
  • Securety Features: you'll want to be able to "lock" your book to prevent re-distribution (without your approval), or be able to unlock certain pages so readers can get a preview before deciding to purchase, or be able to prevent your book from being mass produced by others, etc.
  • "Appearance" Aids:  you'll want some flexibility in font and color choices, page lay-outs, possible interactivity (such as including Internet links so readers can click to a site you have referenced or link to your own site), and extras to make your e-book easier to read.
  • Editing Capabilities: if you need to go back for some minor tweaking of your e-book you want this feature - an incredible time-saver!
Editor Software has all of the above features as well as some excellent extras which will definitely liven up your completed project!

Selling Your Own E-Book On-Line

If you plan to sell your own EBook on-line, be sure to visit the E-Commerce Section of the WebGuide for information on how to accept credit cards on-line (I'd recommend the Total Solution Package since this is the least expensive and comes complete with almost all the tools you will need such as shopping cart, transaction processing, etc.).

You will also want to review our section here on "Selling Tools". Briefly, you will want to have your own web site on-line to promote your book as well as provide more information on who you are, how to contact you, etc. You will probably want some solid promotion software. You may even require useful tools such as autoresponders, etc. (these are optional tools helping you manage your own on-line business and automating many of the tedious tasks required in selling on-line).

The internet has opened up some incredible doorways of opportunity for writers. At last you can reach and build your audience with full control over your own published works. However, don't let me mislead you here... you will have to know how to find your audience and know ways of how you can help them find you! This is an entire subject on its own. Again, I refer you to the WebGuide for details on how to promote your own projects on-line. It isn't as difficult as it may seem but it will require time on your part (or you can hire someone or a site to do the promotion part for you).

Publish By Others

Tools You Will Need

The software you will require to begin typing your text for publishing by others will vary depending on the publisher you are submitting to. See our section on "Publishers" for more information. Some will require you to have WordPerfect software, others require Microsoft Word format, some prefer it in .pdf format (described above), some only require that the completed submitted text be in ASCII format or Rich Text format (which you can do usng Wordpad if you are using Windows95 or a higher version of Windows).

On-Line Publishing Options

There are a host of on-line publishers to choose from. Be sure to read the fine print before submitting your work to any of them. We have provided some information in our "Publishers" section, however it may not be current. (Unfortunately, we do not have the manpower nor resources to follow-up on most information we have collected or received on-line.)

We hope this section has helped you.
