"Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" by Rebecca Wells received 646 reviews at Amazon.com (at the time of this writing) and ranked highly in their Bestsellers list for several weeks... and that's just the reviews at Amazon. What made this book so popular?
If you were to take a poll among authors of fiction, editors, and publishers the results for the question ... "What is the best part about this book?" ... the answer would very likely be "Character Development". On the other hand, ask the same question of women readers you would probably find a wide range of answers.
Just take a quick look at the passionate reviews given by readers of all ages:
- "This is one of the best books I have ever read. I found that I truly had love and compassion for the characters."
- "Finally, a story that reflects real life. The writer does not try to sugar coat or apologize for the way the characters are."

I never thought that I would love this book so much, but it has become one of my classic summer reads."
- "After the third time reading this book, I have had the worst trouble finding anything that even comes near to the profound joy this book gave me. It made me call my best friend and tell her how much I love her and how I would give anything for those days long gone where we just hung out together. Thank you Rebecca for an exceptional read!"
- "I originally bought this book because I just wanted something different, did I ever get that! I'm hooked now. This is by far my all time favorite book. Hard to put down and I'm ready to read it over and over, something I've never done."
Perhaps that's the secret behind the book's popularity - the fact that many women, of all ages, can relate to the book's characters, or at the very least relate to its overall theme. To draw such intense emotions from the reader a writer must develop characters extremely well... but more than that, must "involve" the reader with each character as well. Our hats go off to Rebecca Wells on a job well done!
It will be very interesting to see the movie version -- and compare the screenwriter's version to the original book version. I believe it will take some skilled directing -- and skilled casting -- to pull off the same success as the book has had. Will the movie version allow the viewer to create their own perceptions or will the movie makers force the viewer to accept the director's perceptions of what the story is "really" all about?
