Practice survival first. If you are not educated in the ways of the wilds you leave yourself open to many risks. Nature can be a fun place to visit, but it requires a healthy respect too. There are many dangers facing the outdoor enthusiast.

Safety And Survival Skills In The Great Outdoors

Getting lost in the wilds isn't a picnic. When going on any outings it's recommended to bring a survival kit along. We've put together a basic kit list for everyone to use as a guide but we strongly recommend everyone review the links to excellent informative sites on this topic too. An excellent book on the subject is Primitive Wilderness Living and Survival Skills by John McPherson. Check the Survival Kit link for more details on this important subject.

What about children? Have you put together special "fanny pack survival kits" for your kids? Have you taught them how to use them and why they need them? There is another great site covering this topic on the net listed to the right.

Bringing a pet along brings more special considerations. A fun site provides great information for this too. Those of you thinking about bringing your pet along may want to review this.

It's all about respect, really. Respecting your surroundings generally rewards you. Respecting the wildlife in your surroundings is a must. For more information we'll be building a section on wildlife. Be sure to bookmark our Resource Center for these pages.

Certain plant life brings with it another set of possible dangers. Poison berries, poison ivy, poson mushrooms, and more... We're building a section on this topic to assist all outdoor enthusiasts.

Ok, enough about the dangers lurking around each corner. You'll find some fun information in our resource center too - such as edible roots and berries (with a few recipes), project sheets, game ideas, and more.

But, let's keep in mind, to really enjoy nature we must preserve it too. There are a few excellent sites on the net to guide you on how best to "leave no trace" protecting the environment you are visiting. Be sure to take a moment to visit them too.

Now on to some of the fun stuff! Let's check out our first tip sheet next.
