Introduction To Aromatherapy

Introduction

The Healing Power of Aromatherapy
by K. Myers, 03-28-1998

Did you know each person has their own scent and that it changes slightly when you are sick, healthy, angry, joyful, in love...? Are you aware of how much essential oils can enrich your life - even heal? Explore this and more at the New Age Club in this topic section where we delve into aromatherapy and discover how much it can do for your life. We'll be adding to this topic section regularly too - with additional recipes, mixtures, and more in the months/years to come.

If you are a member of the club and would like to submit information for this topic section, feel free to submit it to our Club List and our moderators will review it for possible inclusion here.

A little history...

As far back as 2,000 BC healing with herbs was well known and widely practiced. The Egyptians considered scents and essences the most effective method of healing with evidence found in many tombs/pyramids. In Iraq a 60,000 year old skeleton was found covering a vessel containing pollen of the healing herbs and flowers found in that area. In Babylon 2000 BC we hear of kings receiving massages with essential oils and taking scented baths. In the first century BC Romans were known to collect exotic scents during their war campaigns.

Approximately 1000 BC marks the beginning of distillation in Persia - moving aromatherapy to an advanced level.

We're not going into a chronological history here on aromatherapy. If you are interested in exploring this subject further, get the book "The Ancient and Healing Art of Aromatherapy" by Clare Hill which chronicles the development of aromatherapy from ancient Egypt to the present day, and provides an illustrated directory of 30 top extracts ranging from cedarwood to ylang-ylang.

And here is where I'm going to make a strong recommendation! This site will provide recipes, some basic information, some shared tips from our members, even an index (which we'll be building slowly over the months/years to come) of the different oils/scents and their application. It WILL NOT be able to answer all your questions. If you really want a full grounded knowledge in aromatherapy - definitely purchase one of the several excellent books available on the subject. We've set up a book reference section in our Resource Center to help you make an informed purchase. I don't recommend anyone get into aromatherapy without having at least one excellent guide book. Mixing of some scents can create highly toxic reactions - reduce the risk with a good guide book.

Ok, sorry folks, but it had to be said. Now let's dive in and have some fun exploring aromatherapy together! The next page "How Scents Work" describes the area of the mind where scent messages are stored and why they affect your sense of judgement.
