Getting Doctor's Help
Most important --- be honest with your doctor on these two points --- (1) how much the colic bothers your baby, and (2) how much the colic bothers you. Here are some things which may help when discussing baby's colic problems with his/her doctor. It may help if you begin a journal and bring it with you. Make notes of the following:Don't hesitate to let yourself go during an office visit. This gets the point across that your baby's colic bothers you. My doctor asked (on my son's first appointment) "So how is motherhood?" and my answer was quick and blunt "Sheer hell." This was for my son's 2-week wellness check-up. Needless to say, his doctor got the point quickly -- and was also very quick to step in and help us through it all.
- When the colic episodes start, how often they occur, how long they last.
- The time of day and the circumstances around which they occur (at home, with caregivers other than mother, when the family is busy).
- What seems to turn the colicky epsiodes on and what turns them off.
- Where you feel the baby's pain is coming from; what his face, abdomen and extremities look like.
- A description of the cry.
- Details about feeding: breast or bottle, frequency, swallowing do you hear your baby gulping air?
- Nature of your baby's bowel movements (easy or straining, soft or hard, how frequent).
- Spitting up: how often after feeding, how much force.
- What baby's bottom looks like: a persistent diaper rash or a red, burnt-looking bottom suggests some sort of food intolerance.
- What you have tried to do for the colicky episodes, what worked and what didn't.
- What your diagnosis or suspicions are.
Since most colicky episodes occur away from the doctor's office doctors do not have the privilege of witnessing a colicky attack. They can only determine how severe it is through your communications so it is important to communicate this thoroughly.
