Getting Doctor's Help

Most important --- be honest with your doctor on these two points --- (1) how much the colic bothers your baby, and (2) how much the colic bothers you. Here are some things which may help when discussing baby's colic problems with his/her doctor. It may help if you begin a journal and bring it with you. Make notes of the following: Don't hesitate to let yourself go during an office visit. This gets the point across that your baby's colic bothers you. My doctor asked (on my son's first appointment) "So how is motherhood?" and my answer was quick and blunt "Sheer hell." This was for my son's 2-week wellness check-up. Needless to say, his doctor got the point quickly -- and was also very quick to step in and help us through it all.

Since most colicky episodes occur away from the doctor's office doctors do not have the privilege of witnessing a colicky attack. They can only determine how severe it is through your communications so it is important to communicate this thoroughly.
