More Possible Coping Solutions
Here are a few methods used by other parents coping with colic. If you have some you would like to share please let me know by contacting me through this form ...I would appreciate your input. The Neck Nestle
"Baby snuggles her head into the groove between my jaw and chest. My jawbone drapes gently over her head and my voicebox (the front of my neck) presses against her head. Tiny babies hear not only with their eardrums, but with the vibrations of their skullbones. Sing something very monotonous and droning like "Ol' Man River" and your baby should drift comfortably off to sleep. This neck nestle works best for fathers because of the lower pitch and high vibrations of the male voice."Bent-Forward Cuddle
Some high-need babies do not cuddle easily. They stiffen their muscles and arch their backs. Others like to see while being carried. You can relax this kind of baby by carrying her/him in a bent-forward position. Press baby's back against your chest and cradle baby in your arms beneath her thighs. When you bend baby's hips and legs upward, she/he tends to relax her/his entire back, becoming less of an archer. The Warm Fuzzy
Another one for fathers --- drape the bare-skinned but diapered baby over your bare chest. Place baby's ear over your heartbeat. The rhythm of your heart combined with the rhythm of your breathing movements plus firm, rhythmic patting on the baby's back will usually soothe both members of this pair back to sleep. (Best done with babies 3 months of age and younger --- older babies tend to squirm too much.)Abdominal Relaxation Techniques
Sometimes warm and gentle pressure on the abdomen helps soothe a colicky baby. Here are a few I've read about but haven't tried... "Place baby tummy down on a half-filled warm water bottle that you have covered with a towel to protect baby's skin. Letting him fall asleep stomach down on a cushion with his legs dangling over the edge causes some soothing pressure to be applied to his belly. Some babies enjoy dad's large, warm hand pressing gently on their tummies --- the palms should be over the navel and the fingers and thumb should encircle baby's abdomen."Motion Soothers
Some babies prefer stillness while to other high-need babies motion is the soother. Motion swings set at approximately 60 beats per minute (for some this may not work because swings only provide a back-and-forth motion). One mother placed her baby in a car seat and strapped baby and car seat on top of an automatic dryer - the vibrations helped soothe. Riding on the freeway is most effective --- after baby falls asleep (usually takes at least 20 minutes) keep baby in the car seat and carry him into the house; let him sleep as long as possible still in the seat. I don't know what we would have done without the vibrating bouncer we picked up for a buck at a garage sale. Sounds of things which move rhythmically often soothe fussy babies: revolving ceiling fan, waves on a beach, waterfall, pendulum of a grandfather clock, trees swaying in the wind, a metronome, etc.White Noise
Running a vacuum cleaner was a tip submitted by one of our readers -- "works like a charm" for some infants. Other "white noise" sources have been known to work. There are a few tips you may want to review for getting help from your baby's doctor next.
