Tempura Paint Mixtures & Eggshell Chalk

    Egg Shell Chalk
  • six eggshells
  • 1 tsp very hot water from tap
  • 1 tsp flour
Wash eggshells making sure they don't have any egg left in them. Dry thoroughly. Grind them (with a rock outside on a sidewalk or other hard concrete surface) into a fine powder. One soup spoonful of this powder makes one stick of chalk.

Pick out any little bits of eggshell that are still not ground up and dispose. Mix flour and hot water in a small dish. Stir to make paste - put powder into paste mixture and mix/mash well.

Shape mixture into a chalk stick then roll up in a paper towel. Let dry (approximately 3 days). To use, just peel the paper off one end - great for sidewalk art. (Not suitable for chalkboards.)

    Egg Tempura
  • colored chalk (bright pastel chalks are best)
  • water
  • one egg
Break off pieces of chalk and grind them into powder in an old pottery bowl with a round rock. Put the colored powder into cups (careful not to breathe any).

Crack an egg and separate the white from the yolk. Put the yolk in a bowl and add 2 teaspoons of water. Whip it up with a fork until the egg and water are frothy yellow.

Add drops of egg-water to the powdered chalk and stir with a paintbrush until you make a smooth, runny paint. Now use it in a painting!

    Tempura and Starch (1)
  • 1/8 cup liquid starch
  • 1 tbsp powdered tempura
Pour starch directly onto paper. Sprinkle the tempura over the starch. Mix the colour in as you paint.
    Tempura and Starch (2)
  • 2 cup powdered tempura
  • 1 cup liquid starch
  • water
Mix tempura and starch until it is smooth and creamy. Slowly add water until the mixture has a good, thick consistancy.
    Dry Starch Tempura Paint
  • 1 cup dry laundry starch
  • 1 cup mild soap powder
  • 2 tbsp powdered tempura
  • 1 cup water
Combine all ingredients. Beat the mixture until it is smooth. Add more water if mixture is too thick.
    Flour Paint
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 tbsp liquid soap
  • 3/4 cup water
  • food colouring or powdered tempura
Combine the first 3 ingredients until the mixture is a thick paste. Tint with food colouring or powdered tempera.
