Chat Rooms Ruined My Relationship

Chat Rooms Ruined My Relationship
Sent in by LS, BC, Canada

We were all in chat just kicking back and having a good time, you know? Then in bursts sheri123 - and I do mean BURSTS. The problem with this particular chat room is that you can "lurk" in it, meaning you don't have to show people you're really there until you actually type something. I figure she must have been lurking for quite a while... She already had her "targets" picked out and literally publicly attacked them all right in front of us.

I was just an observer. I really didn't know many people in this chat room so I was pretty quiet and only participated when I felt comfortable about what I was saying. Everyone there seemed really nice, and friendly too. They had a great sense of humor and I was enjoying the antics of the "room". But then sheri123 showed up.

She started right off accusing in ALL CAPS (which in chat means you're yelling) - shouting at one lady whom I had thought was really nice and sweet, accusing this woman of telling all sorts of lies to Red689. "YOU TRAMP!!!! YOU TOLD HIM I WAS HAVING AN AFFAIR!! YOU LIED YOU..."

The language got pretty vulgar. I was kind of stunned, just sitting back watching. One other lady jumped in to calm things down, but sheri123 turned on her stating "YOU WERE IN ON IT TOO, YOU B----!! DON'T TRY TO PLAY ALL SWEET WITH ME!!!"

Even the guys in the chat were getting upset as the tirade wore on. They were doing their best to calm the woman down too, but that's when sheri123's two friends jumped in. It seemed they were bashing everyone and anyone who typed anything... basically accusing everyone in the "room" at the time as being a party to sheri123's broken relationship.

"WE WERE S'POSE TO MARRY IN 3 WEEKS!!! I'VE ALREADY PACKED TO MOVE IN WITH HIM!!!"

Words were flying across the screen as everyone seemed to be getting into the fray. For a 40-something chat room everyone seemed to be acting a lot younger... a lot less mature. Whew! Too much tension for me. I got out of there quick. It was about 5 days later before I decided I would venture anywhere near those chat rooms. The scene had made me so nervous I went in using "lurk" mode, waiting to see if it was a friendly environment before I was prepared to let others see me.

There were only 2 people in the room - well, actively chatting that is - and about 7 lurkers of which I was one. Well, you will never guess what I saw... There was sheri123 cybering with some other man right in front of all the lurkers.

You know, I had actually started feeling sorry for the woman, regardless of how vulgar she and her friends had been getting previously. I mean, I know how intense on-line relationships can be. I know how a person can get all wrapped up in the other person and vice versa, especially if you're new to chatting or on-line relationships in general. I had been through one myself. It didn't work out - but that's a whole other story. I also know how jealous others can be of an on-line relationship if they themselves are unhappy, alone, or not receiving enough on-line attention from the opposite gender. I've seen some pretty vindictive people out there in cyberland.

In this case, well, I guess I'm glad I didn't choose a side in the "debate". A good lesson I felt from this whole experience was - get to know people really well first before deciding who your friends are (or aren't, as the case may be).

I've heard sheri123 has been "almost married" 9 times now, but that's just a rumor. Still, considering what I witnessed I have no doubt this rumor has a thread of truth to it, don't you? I bet she's getting really tired of all that packing. :-)
